Everything You Need to Know About Windshield Wipers

Over time, your wipers become less useful, less efficient, and less likely to work because of a variety factors that wear them down, such as UV rays, overuse, and other debris that builds up on the windshield. You may not even notice how worn they are until you need them while driving in severe weather. That's why the Ardmore Toyota Service Team recommends regular windshield wiper replacement as part of your automotive service checklist.

Choosing the right wipers for your driving needs

Wiper blades may not be the first things that come to mind when you think of customizing your vehicle, but you still have some options. There are a few different types of wiper blades:

  • Frame-style: The most common and affordable type; typically a metal framework with rubber blades
  • Premium beam-style: These sleeker options have a one-piece design and may have multiple edges and longer life
  • Winter/Heavy-duty: Designed for facing harsh weather; may resist snow and ice

Which type of wiper blade is right for you? As usual, the answer is: it depends. If you're worried about heavy precipitation or expect to be in areas that commonly experience snow and ice, winter blades may make sense for you. If you simply want a basic set of blades that work, a frame-style option might be for you.

Tips for keeping your wipers healthy

We typically recommend wiper replacements twice a year, about six months apart. To ensure your blades don't wear out early though, follow these tips:

  • Don't use your wipers to clear buildup from your windshield, if your vehicle has been parked for a while. Doing so can shred your blades and even damage your wiper motor. Use the squeegee at a gas station to remove heavy debris before using your wipers.
  • Only use your wipers when your windshield is wet. Running blades over dry surfaces can wear them down faster, so turn them off as soon as the windshield is clear.
  • Make sure your windshield wiper fluid is topped off. For the same reason as above.
  • If you expect an over-night freeze or frost, lift your wiper arms to the up position. If the wipers do freeze to the windshield, lift them up manually to break them from the ice. The wiper motor may not be strong enough to break them, and attempting to run the wipers while frozen can break the connection between the motor and the arm.

Don't let a pair of worn windshield wipers ruin your drive. Stop by the Ardmore Toyota Service Center for more information about wiper replacement and other ways of keeping your vehicle in tip-top shape. You can also schedule your service online when you're ready to refit your vehicle with fresh blades.
